Laptop seems to work nicely so far with no complaints from son who we purchased it for.I'm not a fan of windows 8 and don't think it will ever go over well for laptops and home computers. If I wanted a tablet I would have purchased one. The window 8 tablet feature is annoying.

Nice HP Pavilion g7-2240us 17.3-Inch Laptop for Everyday Use

Excellent all purpose laptop. Extremely quick for all everyday tasks including surfing, email, basic games, etc.The touchpad can get a bit troublesome with the multigesture support but you can go into control panel and shut off certain aspects of it.Great built in features including webcam, hdmi port and card reader make this laptop very versatile.Stays very cool and quiet compared to much older dell machine that it replaced.

The pros:

• Very fast, plenty of hard drive space, built-in SD card reader (I use 64GB SD cards for backups), AWESOME SOUND (from headphones). The built-in speakers also aren't too bad. I have a pair of powered Altec Lansing speakers packed away and always loved the sound so I was glad to see that Altec Lansing audio was built into this laptop. Including Dolby which makes the sound (especially with headphones) truely awesome! You may want to also tweak it to your liking in control panel and Windows Media player, if needed.
• The display is amazingly brilliant and sharp. Very rich colors. I love the size of this display. I was used to a 14" display on the old laptop and hated dragging out a 19" monitor I used to have. This lets me play some casual games and watch videos in just the right size. The laptop isn't so big that it won't fit on larger laptop lap desks, which makes it great for watching movies outside the home office.
• There's a full size keyboard with nice large keys and a keypad. No more having to hit Fn-Numlock to get a number pad (which was integrated into the keyboard on my Lenovo laptop).
• It took a bit to get used to Windows 7 but I'm looking forward to the Windows 8 upgrade which I registered to get for $14.95. You do that directly from Microsoft.
• I was on Skype with a friend a couple times and was amazed I could talk and hear them and without no glitches while talking.
• The built-in video isn't too bad for a low-end video camera. It could be nice for doing video chat or YouTube videos. Just be sure you have plenty of good lighting around you.
• Love the White LED scheme. Goes well aesthetically with the look of the computer, which is a nice glossy black and silver accents.

The Cons:

• The keyboard is back a ways from the front and it takes some getting used to.
• I am still trying to get used to the placement of the keys. LIke the delete/home/end and the way the Control and Alt keys are between an Fn and Windows key on the left. Sometimes I end up hitting Fn instead of Control!
• The Function keys you have to use the Fn key to get F2, F3, etc. F5 doesn't have a pre-mapped function. I had to get used to that but found that it was nice to be able to raise/lower volume and move between songs using the function keys.
• The touchpad is really rough but since I don't use the touchpad much, it sometimes gets in the way. Thankfully you can double tap a little bubble in the upper left to turn it off. Though I think it should show an LED when on and not when off.
• The screen is incredibly glassy. While this makes for an awesomely rich colored and brilliant display, it's also impossible to see if your laptop is facing a window or lamps or just about anything. It pretty much works like a mirror sometimes! I moved my desk around so that it's facing the wall to solve the problem.
• The location of the AC power jack is on the right side towards the back. I liked my Lenovo T61's power jack location better as it was on the back of the computer out of the way.
• 
  
• The hard drive light is a tiny light on the side near the power jack and USB port. This is kinda inconvenient when you want to see hard drive action to see if the computer stopped or if something is using the hard drive a lot. So far I haven't really needed to check it though.
• The WiFi light is on the F12 function key, which if you press F12, you would turn on/off your WiFi. I don't like this as it could be forgotten when using a program that uses F12. Also the WiFi light is either red for off or white for on. It doesn't blink to show if there's any activity going on (my old laptop's light was on the monitor bezel and would blink according to activity). Good thing the router is nearby so I can check activity if I needed to.
• When you first log into the computer for the very first time, the desktop wallpaper is just plain UGLY! Sorry, but that really struck me as odd.

Overall, I still quite happy with the laptop and intend to use it for everyday use be it personal, entertainment, work, etc. I do hope it'll last me a good long time.

Great Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T

Speaking more generally about the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T, it is really well-built, and the screen is gorgeous and extremely crisp (retina-quality to my eyes). Battery life has been excellent, particularly when using light productivity apps as I mentioned above. The fan, which does come on from time to time, is very quiet, and the tablet doesn't get too hot. There is also a setting to keep the fan even more quiet.

As a media consumption device, the tablet shines as well. Firstly, it has surprisingly loud, clear stereo speakers. I've used the tablet to watch some high bitrate 1080p video content, and the device works very well in that context, too. I've installed a couple of my favorite PC games (Medieval II Total War, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), and the games run pretty well (30-40fps on medium-low quality settings). Because the screen is so high-res, I am able to leave anti-aliasing off, so the image quality is better than you'd expect based on the other quality settings.

Final thoughts: Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T device is the future of computing. While the iPad is a revolutionary tablet; this device goes beyond the capabilities of the iPad and is an overall better computing system. There is virtually nothing that can't be done with this incredible new offering from Samsung and Microsoft. Apple will have a run for its money with the introduction of this amazing new hybrid laptop/notebook computer. One last note: I own the new 3rd generation iPad which I consider to be an excellent device. In my opinion; it has always been the standard to which others are trying to catch up to. From what my son has told me, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T is capable of doing so much more than an iPad, that I may consider purchasing one. I honestly believe that the domination of the iPad in the tablet market will come to an end, as more and more hybrid devices such as this Samsung come on the market. Apple may actually have to play catch-up for a change.

Pros:

• It looks great! It has a distinctive mocha case with a nice detail on it. And, no it's not as light as the MacBook Air or something, but is easy to handle, travels well and looks sleek.
• The screen is solid and is a nice size.
• The laptop runs very, very, cool. I don't think that mine has even warmed up a bit.
• Windows 7 looks great on this laptop.
• ASUS has some interesting programs (crapware- but not that crappy).
• I can run MS Office programs, Google Chrome, IE, VPN access my work computer, edit web pages and listen to Pandora at once just fine (occasionally the Pandora skips, but that just might be the connection).

Cons:

• The keyboard takes some getting used to. . . it's very wide, I tend to favor the buttons on the left and some of the command buttons are in areas I did not expect- and on the way right. With that said, it's a little annoying but easily solvable (I just look down more when I am typing).
• The speakers are really not that good. But not a big deal for me because I mostly use this laptop for general home use (to finish projects from work, catch up on volunteer stuff and to check email and my FB). With that said, if I ever felt the need to watch movies or TV shows on it or something, I would just plug in speakers.

I considered getting him a netbook, but for this price, the laptop has everything he needs and lots more storage and features than a netbook. The full version of Windows, processor speed, and a usable version of Word (not just a "sample" version like my old Compaq laptop came with) were features we liked. I was very impressed with the multi-touch features of the mouse touchpad, which take a little getting used to, but are really cool. The blazing i5-3210m processor barely even NEEDS to reach its max clock speed of 2500mhz. a hefty serving of ram compliments both the processor and the surprisingly well performing integrated Intel 4000 processor. Running several instals at once while browsing the web and playing Minecraft all at the same time, seamlessly! The keyboard (with number pad!) is magnificently lit; and the trackpad.. well that is ok too I guess. The trackpad sports cool features such as pinching to zoom, and a nifty scrolling feature which you draw a circle to scroll up or down a page! but with all that said, the trackpad is lacking dedicated clicking buttons, which could be a turn-off for some people. The Sony Vaio also sports a relatively short battery life, but hey! all that processing power doesnt come from your keystrokes!

• The retina display : This screen has to be seen to be believed. The resolution and pixel density are simply unreal. Colors and viewing angles are fantastic. Beware - once you use this display, everything else will seem inadequate.
• Flash storage : Flash storage means there is no physical spinning hard drive. Think of an extremely large thumb drive. What does this mean for performance? Blazingly fast boot up times, faster application opening, and faster performance all around. Not to mention, flash storage is completely silent.
• Performance : Even the lowest level configuration MacBook Pro has insane performance. At least 8 gigabytes of RAM, the latest Intel quad-core processors, and flash storage all equate to terrific performance for you. You simply haven't experienced computing until you've tried this laptop.
• Software : OSX is rock solid, very smooth, and intuitive. I find my productivity increased substantially in comparison to a Windows machine. If you prefer Windows, you are free to install a copy using the software's built in "Boot Camp". I haven't personally used this feature, but there are likely several demonstrations on the web, and it is likely to run very well considering the laptop's stellar internals. The upcoming Mountain Lion (free with a purchase of this machine) should only improve on an already great experience.
• Design : This computer is unbelievably thin. It manages to near the portability of an Ultrabook while making no compromises for performance.
• Much-needed improvements : There are a few smaller, but welcome, additions to this model over previous generations. USB 3.0 ports will allow for faster data transfers - even on the USB 2.0 products you already own. An HDMI out port will allow for you to display your screen on your HDTV, and is much simpler than the dizzying array of dongles required on the previous MacBook Pro. The fans on the system are very quiet,

Apple MacBook Pro MC975LL/A Cons

• The price : This is the biggest one, and needs to be said. This is NOT a budget computer. However, you get what you pay for, and it's difficult to consider this laptop to be over priced when looking at what is included, and at comparable Windows machines.
• 2. Graphics card :The graphics card included on all models is lackluster. Some have claimed to run into lag in basic operations, but I haven't noticed any to speak of, and it is likely you won't either. If you are unsure, try the product in your local electronics store to decide for yourself. You shouldn't expect to run the latest releases, such as Battlefield 3, on max settings, but it will likely suffice for casual games and most hardcore games on lower settings. Tests have been done running Diablo III at reasonable settings with fairly good results on this computer. Still, this is not a gaming machine, and due to the graphics performance and lack of quality titles on Mac, you should look elsewhere if you are in the market for such a laptop.
• Heat issues : Due to the thinness of the computer and Apple's choice of metal in the design, the computer will likely get hot when running more demanding tasks. This is not to say it will overheat easily, but you will be able to tell when your MacBook is really working.

In conclusion, the Cons I've presented are relatively minor issues. If you aren't a huge PC gamer, and you have the money, I cannot recommend this laptop highly enough. I've simply loved every minute I spent using it. It's difficult to avoid hyperbole when describing this machine, but I contest it's the best laptop by any company to date.

Overall, this is a fantastic computer, but it's not for everyone. This system fills a gap in the Mac lineup for users who work above the current iMac capabilities, or those who need portability with desktop power. Those who don't require this performance might want to look at other Macs, but if you run graphic-intense programs, do video editing, watch a lot of media via your computer, Apple has really delivered.

In many ways, this system feels like a distinct footnote in the evolution of Apple products, leading to a point where unbelievably thin and light laptops rival desktops in performance and price. Apple is certainly hopeful that this will bring new customers their way, as the iPad has, although it remains to be seen whether this new system will attract new Mac users, or simply encourage existing customers to move over from their iMacs and Mac Pros. Regardless, Cupertino has put together a heck of a machine, once again.
